What Does a Music Promoter Do?

A music promoter’s main job is to produce live concerts, be they local events or national acts. A promoter can be an individual or a whole company, but their main goal is the same and that’s to produce an exciting live music experience.

Promoters are responsible for a lot of things such as the booking of the artists, marketing and promoting the event, the venue staff, making sure security is booked for the event etc. If the event doesn’t go well it all falls back on the promoter; so even though success as a promoter can be very rewarding it comes with its headaches, and the buck always stops with you.

How Does The Music Promotion Business Work

Part of your job as a promoter is to find talented acts that will put on an amazing show. if you are able to find talent, book them for an even, promote that event well, attract a decent amount of folks to the event, and have them pay at a reasonable rate that still profitable to you, then you’re in the door. Everyone in the city will be talking about how great your event was and will most likely come to one of your next events based on the incredible experienced they had at one of your events.

How Do Promoters Put On Events

Events are held at a venue under a contractual agreement. Sometimes the promoter will pay to rent the venue, while other times the venue operator will provide compensation as a percentage of door sales and/or money made at the bar. in order for the latter to happen the promoter would first have to have a successful track record of selling out events.


The music promotion business can real vigilant sometimes, just like any other business. It’s important for you as a promoter to have everything you expect from the artists, the venue owner and everyone else helping you run the show outline in a contract. This way if anything goes wrong you can have the protection of everything outlined in the contract. The contract is to protect you from any liability if something were to go wrong, like the artists or bands not showing up.


Getting people to an event is the primary goal of any promoter. There are a number of ways to accomplish this including promotions through: flier distribution, email promo blast to your list of music concert event goers, social networking promos, radio promos etc.

Remember that the gold is always in your list, with every event you hold your contact list of not only music professionals should increase, but your contact list of music concert goers should increase as well. the more people you have the opportunity to market and promo your events to, the better!

How to Start Promoting

The best way to start promoting is by working with an experiences and established company or individual. Look up promotion companies in your area and give them a call asking if they need interns or part timers—you will gain valuable experience without risking your own finances or reputation.

You can also call up venue owners and ask if you can come down and see how things are done behind the scenes before an event takes place. You have to get your way in the door by learning the ropes first from experienced individuals, if you go right into things the risk of you failing will be extremely high.
