Social media plays an integral role in the success of an independent artist’s career. As we have seen time and time again an artist can place his music on social media, in the eye’s of millions of viewers and instantly get feedback from millions of listeners around the world. There have been many artists who have become famous through social media, and with the right strategy you can as well

In order to have success with social you have to have a strategy, you can’t go on social media as an artist without a game plan because months will go by and you will have little to no followers and no album sales. In my last article I wrote about The 4 Mistakes Music Artists Should Avoid On Social Media In this article I’m going to make some brief points on why you should be on social media and how to use it to help further you music career.

1) Have a strategy

As I said in the intro you can’t go on social media blindly you have to have a plan and execute it. Ask yourself why are you on social media? How can you benefit from it? What strategies can you use to engage your audience and have them listen to your music? Those artists who register for social media and start posting links to their Itunes page, find that they have no success at all.

The reason for this is that in order for a person to become your fan and then eventually buy your album, you have to build up a good enough rapport with them. A person who doesn’t know who you are or has never heard your music is not going to buy it. You have to build up that trust with them; let them get to know who you are and what your music is all about. In one of our previous articles 5 Ways Artists Can Have More Success On Social Media We spoke about how you can build up this trust and motivate your fans to buy your music.

2) Build Up Your Followers

This may seem like common sense but a lot of new artists can’t seem to grasp this concept. You need an audience to convey your message to. In order to be successful in the music industry you need a following, without a fan base you can’t maintain any level of success. Keep in mind that you don’t have to have millions of people buying your music and concert tickets in order to make a living as a hip hop artists. All you need is to sell your LP for $10 to 10,000 people to earn $100,000!

Now tell me that aint a good wage for the year? If you think not tell me, how much are you earning at your job now? Exactly! lol If you can’t get 10,000 people to buy your music, getting 5,000 people is just as good. $10 (album) x 5,000 people = $50,000. Now if you can’t get 5,000 people to buy your music then you really have some work to do! You really need to find a better way to connect with your audience!

social media marketing3) Build Multiple Platforms To Reach A Wider Audience

It’s not good enough to only be on Twitter and Facebook, in order to reach a larger audience you have to set up profiles on a variety of social media platforms.

There are really only 6 main one’s to be on including: Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Tumblr, Pinterest and Youtube. There are also music social media sites like Soundcloud and Reverbnation but we will address those in another article. You have to place your music where you know your audience frequently visits, and social media is now the number one spot for that.

4) Have Valuable Content

Valuable content is key to turning your followers into die hard fans. Valuable content allows you to connect with your followers and build a lasting bond with them. Fresh valuable content will have your followers come back to your social media pages often and leave comments on what you post. your job is to engage in conversation with them and lead them towards whatever you want them to purchase.

These four elements once mastered will have you connect with your fans and increase your chances of selling millions of records all over the world. It won’t happen overnight but if you put in the effort now, a few years from now you will see the fruits of your labor.
