Top 5 Music Booking Agencies

What Does A Music Booking Agency Do

Music booking agencies basically book performances for their artists. When they book performances for their artist they take a “booking fee” for their services and pay the artist the rest of money. A good booking agency will find gigs for an artist to perform at all year round. That’s if the artist is a hot item or has a good size following of fans that will pay to see him perform.

How Do I Get A Booking Agency To Represent Me

There are many ways to get the attention of a booking agency, but an up and coming artist can’t call up and agency and ask if they can represent him. It doesn’t work like that. In order for an agency to consider an artist his manager has to call up and negotiate a deal on his behalf. And the only way for that to happen is if the artist has ticket selling power. The artist has to have a few hits under his belt and also have a proven track record that he can sell out shows. The artist has to prove that he has a decent sized “Draw”. Draw basically means how many people the artist can draw to the arena. “Draw” is crowd size.

This is because the objective of a performance is not only to put on a good show but to turn a profit. If the venue owner and booking agency don’t turn a profit, you won’t see any profit either. So you have to have drawing power for an agency to even look your way.

Other Appearances Besides Performances

Many of the booking agencies book you for a variety of appearances not just for performances. Some of the appearances you can get booked for are: autograph signings at a music store, speaking at a music seminar, talking to youths at a school about music as a career etc. but no matter what the appearance is they have to run it by you and your manager first. And it’s also good to keep in mind that different appearances pay you differently.

How Much Do Booking Agencies Charge

Booking agencies typically take a 10% fee of the appearances they book for you. It’s rare that they take more, but it’s not unusually. Many states have a law that talent agencies can only take 10% of the bookings they make for their talent. It is good to do research in order to know the laws in your state to see how much percentage an agency can take from you as an artist.
